We are familiar with the Beatitudes, Matthew’s version of Jesus' Sermon. We aren’t as well versed in the Sermon on the Plain, outlined in Luke 6:17-26—our text for this week. There is some overlap between the two, of course, but there are also significant differences. Picture the scene: A crowd has gathered, coming from all directions even from Sidon. They are desperate to hear Jesus’ words and to feel his healing power. And standing there, face-to-face with his disciples and the people, Jesus offers blessings that may seem upside-down to the world’s way of thinking.
