GIVING UP BAD THEOLOGY 2 Sunday Worship | Henning Künzel | March 1, 2026

Henning Künzel invites us to clean out another bit of unhelpful bad theology, "The Old Guy in the Sky." You know the image. A bearded grandfather figure floating somewhere above the clouds, keeping score, occasionally intervening, mostly watching. It’s an image many of us grew up with. It’s simple. It’s familiar.

But it is also too small. Because the God revealed in Scripture is not male. Not contained by space. Not limited to a body, a gender, or a location. And when we shrink God into something manageable—something that looks suspiciously like us—we risk turning mystery into caricature. Today we’ll explore how Scripture resists easy images, how it stretches our imagination, and how Jesus reveals not a distant sky-god, but a living, relational, self-giving presence.

So let’s open our hearts.

Let’s loosen our grip on small pictures of God.

And let’s make room for a bigger, freer, wilder grace.
