GIVING UP BAD THEOLOGY 1 Sunday Worship | Pastor Damian Carruthers | February 22, 2026
Welcome to Lent! Also known as “Spiritual Spring Cleaning” for Christians. This year, instead of giving up chocolate or caffeine (which, let’s be honest, is borderline heretical in the Pacific Northwest), we’re giving up something even more tempting: bad theology. That’s right. For the next six weeks, we’re Marie-Kondo-ing our beliefs, holding up each dusty doctrine and asking, “Does this spark love?” If not… maybe it’s time for the theological Goodwill bin. So grab your spiritual Swiffers and let’s get started. This week, we’re starting with a big one: Giving Up Biblical Inerrancy. Inerrancy is the idea that the Bible is 100% word for literal word without error—scientifically, historically, even geographically (yes, even those maps in the back). But here’s the problem: when we treat the Bible like it’s a divine encyclopedia or a legal contract from heaven, we can miss its poetry, its power, and ironically, its truth.
