Last week, we heard Jesus’ words in what’s often called the “Sermon on the Plain.” He spoke about blessings and woes—challenging our expectations of who is truly blessed in God’s kingdom. He turned things upside down (or really, nightside up!), lifting the poor, the hungry, and the weeping while warning those who are comfortable and self-satisfied. Today, we continue in that same teaching, but Jesus takes things even deeper. If last week was about seeing the world differently, this week is about living differently. He calls us not just to love those who are easy to love but even our enemies. To respond to hate with kindness, to give without expecting anything in return, and to live with radical mercy!
